Cinderella - May 2019
Is there a better-known tale in the entire world than that of the poor mistreated lass whose fairy godmother arranges for her to attend a gala ball where she meets a handsome price that falls in love with her? The ultimate in romantic wish-fulfilment fantasy, the story of Cinderella dates back at least to sixteenth century Germany, although its first written account has been attributed to the seventeenth century’s French fairy-tale author, Charles Perrault.
The story is the classic fairy tale. Orphaned Cinderella has become a servant to her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. The handsome prince, in an effort to locate the perfect bride, sponsors a grand ball where he may meet all the eligible young ladies of the kingdom. Cinderella kept busy sewing and cleaning for her stepsisters has no chance to make a gown for herself. After her stepsisters leave for the ball, a despondent Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother, who grants her wishes and sends her to the ball with the warning that she must leave by midnight. From the moment she arrives, she is all the prince can see. They dance. They laugh. They sing. The clock begins to strike midnight. Cinderella beats a hasty retreat and leaves a glass slipper in her wake. The prince finds the slipper and scours the kingdom for the one-foot it will fit....
